Eleven hours of train travel the next day got me back to Staufen around 8pm. I had not told the family I would not be around over Xmas and then I felt bad because they had left some Xmas goodies out for me. They went down very well. We did not communicate much as I was under the house and they had their own lives. They got paid by the Goethe Institut to host students, but that did not necessarily include lots of conversation. I do remember having a fondu with them at one stage, and trying my best to describe in German what 'çerebral palsy' is.
I phoned Canberra from a telephone box at midnight on New Year's Eve, with the sounds of revelry in the background. I remember saying that even though there was snow all around it wasn't really cold - probably not as cold as it gets back home. There was a distinct lack of wind, which probably helped.
