In between going to classes and doing big trips, my friends John, Sandra and I often did mini excursions around the area. Sometimes we would walk through the Staufen end of the Black Forest then come back and eat yummy cake in the local gourmet shop, Cafe Decker.
Other times we would go to Freiburg, where we would have Maccas.
We went to France a couple of times, as Colmar is just over the border, 45 kms from Staufen. It was good to be able to use my French and impress my friends!
Staufen is also close to the Swiss border so I did a solo excursion down to Zurich (about 90 mins).
We also went high up in the mountains on a train and got a real taste of snow.

One day I went to the local high school (Gymnasium) and spoke to the students there. To my surprise their command of Shakespeare would rival that of my students back home - a little bit humbling. Of course they all have English as a second language now, which helps.
