On the 3rd January a lot of the students went to Munich for four days, but I really wanted to go to Berlin, so that's what I did.
I took the InterCity train up there, using my Eurail pass, and stayed in a former factory called Hotel Transit. I think it was here that whilst having breakfast in the dining room we were entertained by the manager in his office playing"Memory"from Cats on the trombone. I was also where I got locked out of my room and when I tried to get back in I discovered that my roomate was a male. I knew this because he urinated in the sink when he thought I was asleep. So bizarre.
I really enjoyed the old West Berlin, which was lively and modern, but I took myself out to the old eastern part on a drizzly grey day to visit Sachsenhausen concentration camp. That was a real eye opener, because of the sights and the smells that were still there. There were no mod cons then as there are now, so it was self guided and had access to all areas.
